The inflationary use of the word wellness. Who determines what wellness is?
Is there a clear meaning to wellness?
Wellness is a multidimensional term that is often understood as a holistic approach to promoting health and well-being. It includes both physical and mental aspects and aims to achieve a harmonious balance between body, mind, and soul. Wellness activities can range from physical exercise and nutrition to relaxation techniques and stress management to social and environmental practices. So a trip to the gym, a certain diet with supplements, or even a yoga session with friends.
While wellness can mean something different to different people, the core idea is to proactively care for your own health and strive for a fulfilling and balanced life.
Are there certain minimum standards that define a company as a wellness facility?
In Germany, there are no strictly defined minimum requirements that clearly define what qualifies a facility as a wellness facility. However, general expectations and industry standards exist. Qualified personnel to carry out the wellness services is also an important factor. What defines a spa treatment?
A spa treatment is a service aimed at relaxation, recovery, and care of the body. It typically includes massages, facials, body scrubs, hydrotherapy, and other moisturizing or cleansing treatments. Spa treatments are often performed in a calm, relaxing environment and may also include therapeutic elements such as aromatherapy or healing baths. They aim to promote both physical and psychological relaxation and improve overall well-being.
Does a sauna session count as spa or wellness?

While spa treatments typically include services such as massages, facials and body scrubs performed by a professional, a sauna visit is more of a self-guided activity designed to relax and promote health. Through the heat and the alternation between warm and cold phases, the sauna offers benefits such as detoxification, relaxation of muscles and improvement of blood circulation, which is considered part of a holistic approach to wellness.
